We all know how important mentoring is to career success. Yet having a sponsor is even more critical to advancement in the workplace. What exactly is a sponsor? And how do they differ from mentors?

Mentors are confidantes. They listen, give advice and support. They are excellent at providing perspective and sharing experiences. Sponsors, on the other hand, are senior people who see your potential and vouch for you when you’re not in the room. They offer visibility and remove barriers.

That’s why we like the expression mentors help skill you up and sponsors help move you up.

Research shows that

sponsorship is a highly effective way to accelerate women’s careers.

Sylvia Ann Hewlett, an expert on gender and workplace issues, states:

  1. Sponsorship is different to mentoring

  2. Sponsorship involves the active and deliberate use of power to facilitate the careers of others

  3. Sponsorship can be a positive enabler of development and careers

  4. Mentoring programs are not a substitute for sponsoring
